1292017 Directional crystallization SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 23259/ 71 Heading B1S In order to produce a high degree of purification, with a rapid rate of travel of the solidliquid interface, in progressive freezing, the interface travels transversely to the direction of a centrifugal acceleration greater than that of gravity and to the direction of a thermallyinduced convective flow of molten material Molten naphthalene 11 may be subjected to a centrifugal acceleration from 10 to 400 times that of gravity and, on switching off heaters 9 and 10, allowed to solidify in contact with annular plates 3, 4, while heaters 16 and 20 remain energised. Heater 20 produces a convective flow in the directions of arrows C, D parallel to solid-liquid interface 17. The impurities collect in the central molten material and this is drained off to give a yield of about 80% of the purer material
