Abstract

1294838 Turning; bar-stock feeding H LINDEMANN 21 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 10543/71 Headings B3B and B3T A machine for turning bars or tubes comprises a rotary cutter head 3 adapted to be traversed longitudinally of a non-rotatably supported workpiece 5, and flaw detecting means 9, 10 arranged to test the workpiece for flaws simultaneously with the machining operation. The cutter head may have cutters 11 adapted to cut in both directions of movement or alternatively in only one direction and may make repeated cuts till the flaws have been removed; alternatively the flaw detecting means may provide an indication of the depth of cut required to remove the flaw and sufficient increment of cut is then applied to finish the workpiece in a second cutting operation. The flaw-detecting means may control the traverse movement of the carriage 4 in such manner that a change of speed occurs at a flaw so as to mark the tube in the vicinity of the flaw. The detecting means may be mounted to rotate with the cutter head. Reference is made to the use of ultrasonic tracers, eddy-current tracers and induction coils or cutting force or friction measuring instruments for the detection of the flaws and these may be used in conjunction with various, e.g. electronic control elements. The bars or tubes may be fed from a feed rack 1 and discharged to a discharge rack 2 and are mounted for machining in clamping jaws 6, 7 adapted to be released and lowered to allow passage of the cutter head 3.
