Abstract

1295140 Optical Apparatus NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 23 Nov 1970 [24 Feb 1970] 55660/70 Heading G2J [Also in Division G4] A raised pattern is read by directing a beam of electromagnetic radiation into a body so as to be totally internally reflected at a surface of the body, and using the raised pattern to press a flexible sheet of material into optical contact with the surface to frustrate the total internal reflection over an area having the shape of the pattern, the flexible sheet being movable to bring fresh portions adjacent the surface. The patterns may be embossed numerals on a credit card, or the raised part may be ground in which patterns are formed as depressions or holes. The optical pattern thus formed is taken as the negative image in the totally internally reflected beam or the positive image in the critical angle cone or both and displayed on a screen and/or projected onto a photo-cell array. The credit card may be moved perpendicularly to its surface to press the flexible sheet against the surface of the body which is stationary, the flexible sheet being advanced periodically (manually or automatically) to bring unused portions into use. Alternatively, the card may be driven by a roller having a resilient rim, through the gap between this roller and a rotatable disc, this disc being the body in which total internal reflection occurs, the flexible sheet being a loop entrained around the disc and a roller. Adjustable guides for the card are provided. The card itself triggers operation by closing a switch. A column of photo-cells is used in this embodiment, their outputs being digitised using a threshold obtained via an integrator from a reference photo-cell or by averaging the outputs of the photocells above, and sampled in turn repeatedly to serialize an effectively two-dimensional scan of the pattern to feed recognition means. A modification supports the above disc between three rollers (rather than on a shaft), one of these rollers being that used for the flexible sheet loop (see above). The loop could be fixed to the disc in which case a shallow depression is provided in the centre of the width of the circumferential surface of the disc, the loop being pressed into this depression by the raised pattern. A further embodiment moves the card on a carriage between a roller and the flexible sheet loop to press the sheet against the body in which total internal reflection occurs, this body being stationary. The sampling referred to is synchronized with the card speed, by referencing with the drive motor or (if the apparatus is hand-driven) with the disc (by photo-cell detection of timing marks on the disc or using a shaft position encoder on the disc shaft).
