Abstract

1295149 Graft polymers SOC ITALIANA RESINE SpA 11 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 59140/70 Heading C3G A process for the continuous manufacture in emulsion of graft polymers from vinyl monomers, alone or in mixture, comprises preparing an emulsion of the vinyl monomer or monomers in water, supplying the emulsion to a reactor in which the graft polymer is produced and to which is separately supplied the elastomer latex, the polymerization initiator and the other necessary additives, carrying out the polymerization reaction in the reactor, and separating the product of reaction. Preferred vinyl monomers are styrene, α-methyl styrene, nucleus substituted styrenes, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, alkyl methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate, and alkyl acrylates which are used in such quantities that the water is present in the emulsion in the amount 30-70%, preferably 40-60%, by weight. The elastomer may be of natural or synthetic origin, e.g. polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer or an acrylic elastomer. The other substances present in the reaction may be added separately or mixed appropriately with the two main agents supplied. The initiators, emulsifiers, dispersion agents and modifiers used are conventional. The emulsifier may be used in an amount 1-5% by weight of the polymer. The polymerization reaction is preferably carried out in an inert atmosphere at temperatures between 50‹ to 80‹C. and more preferably 65‹ to 75‹ C. The process results in a graft polymer having a degree of grafting between 35 and 70%. In a preferred form graft polymers are produced by polymerizing in two or more reactors disposed in series, the second or subsequent reactor(s) acting as finishing vessel(s). Preferably the first reactor operates at a temperature between 65‹ and 75‹ C. with dwell times of 1-4 hours, while the second or subsequent reactors operate at a temperature of between 65‹ and 85‹ C. with a dwell time as required to produce less than 1% by weight non-reacted monomer content in the latex.
