Abstract

1295980 Measuring liquid level and density: measuring force HYDRO APPARATE – BAUANSTALT ZUCKER & CONTZEN 31 Dec 1970 [19 Jan 1970] 61988/70 Headings G1H, G1S G1W A device for measuring the level and the density of a liquid 1 comprises a balance arm 7, a cable 3 carrying a liquid displacing element 2 at one end and being wrapped around drum 13 at the other, a wheel 8 mounted on arm 7 over which the cable passes, a first motor 17 for winding and unwinding the cable from the drum and a second motor 18 for varying a restoring force applied to the beam 7 through a spring 9. Any movement of the balance arm 7 from its horizontal datum position causes counterweight 27 to operate one of two switching elements for controlling motor 17 or 18 according to the setting of switch 15. When measuring liquid level switch 15 is set to control motor 17 and arm 7 is in its datum position when element 2 is immersed to a depth h. When the liquid level rises or falls, the balance of arm 7 is upset causing it to tilt and actuate one of the switching elements to switch on motor 17. Motor 17 rotates the drum 13 to unwind or wind the cable on the drum, depending on which of the two switching elements is actuated, to lower or raise the element 2 until it is again immersed to the depth h when arm 7 again occupies its datum position and motor 17 is switched off. Thus the liquid level is given by the angular movement of motor 17. Drum 13 is arranged so that as it rotates it moves axially cf Fig. 2 (not shown) so that the cable is wound neatly on the drum and to effect compensation for the varying weight of cable acting on the arm. This latter compensation is effected by a cam follower 12 mounted on one end of a lever 11 and engaging cone 14 on drum 13. As the drum moves axially lever 11 is caused to tilt and vary the the force applied by a spring 10 to arm 7. To measure the density of the liquid, motor 17 is actuated by switch 16 to lower element 2 to the depth at which the density is measured. Switch 15 is set so that motor 18 is actuated by counterweight 27 and the switching elements. Motor 18 drives a rack connected to spring 9 and thus varies the tension in spring 9 until the arm becomes balanced again, when motor 18 is switched off. The density is then related to the angular position of motor 18. The density may be measured at several depths.
