Abstract

1295990 Non reusable launchers; projectiles NORRIS INDUSTRIES Inc 22 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 60955/70 Headings F3A and F3C A non-reusable hand-held projectile launcher comprises a forward tubular launcher section 23 having a rearward tubular case section 21 telescopically received therein so that the sections can be moved relatively to each other between a telescoped inoperative relationship to an extended operative relationship. A firing means including a trigger 34 is mounted on the launcher section 23 and is operable to fire the launcher only when the launcher is in its operative condition. The case section 21 has a nozzle fixed to its rear end (Figs. 5, 14, not shown) and houses a projectile 65 and a propellant charge 66, the projectile being retained within the section by a means which is releasable in response to gas pressure generated during the burning of the propellent charge. Obturator means 67, 75 are provided between the projectile 65 and the charge 66 to act as a piston in the launcher during the launching of the projectile. A seal 89, 90, 91 is also provided between the two sections of the launcher. In the construction shown the firing means also includes a spring-loaded, firing pin carrying sear 45, which is housed in a tubular member 38 fast with the case section 21, the sear 45 thus being cocked by engagement with the trigger 34 during the extension of the launcher. The trigger 34 is movable transversely of the launcher to release the sear 45, the firing pin 53 thereof being urged against a primer 50 which is positioned at the head of a firing line 48. The firing line 48 connects with an igniter mounted in a vented tubular member 69. The tubular member 69 is attached at its rear end to a plug seated in the nozzle (Figs. 5, 14, not shown) and is connected at its forward end through a shearable connection 73 with the obturator means 67, 65. The obturator means is releasably held in the rear end of the projectile and is released from the projectile by the camming action of pivoted fins 83 as they are erected under spring loading after the projectile has left the launcher. The rear end of the launcher is sealed against moisture by a plastics material. The plug in-the nozzle may be a solid body or a thin walled member consisting of two halves operatively connected together. The firing mechanism is provided with a safety (Figs. 7, 8, 9, not shown) which is slidable longitudinally of the launcher from an active position to a non-active position in which positions the safety is latched. A telescopic sight is pivotably mounted on the launcher section (Figs. 1, 2, not shown).
