1297375 Track switching systems; vehicle routing JEUMONT-SCHNEIDER 21 Nov 1969 [22 Nov 1968 21 July 1969] 57093/69 Headings B7L and B7N In a conveying system in which a carriage 12 including chain engaging towing pin 13, load engaging aperture 16, centring roller 15 and running rollers 14 is moved along a duo-rail overhead track including rails 1a, 1b, the carriage is moved from main track 1a, 1b to branch track 3a, 3b over a junction with no moving parts by a linear motor arrangement comprising field coils 4, 5, which co-operate either with an armature formed by the body 12 of the carriage or with an armature on a separate vehicle which tows the carriage over the junction. In the first linear motor arrangement the coils can be on the carriage and an armature provided adjacent the track. Assume the carriage destination requires that the carriage be routed to the branch tracks 3a, 3b, then as the carriage arrives at position A-A the main track conveyer chain is disconnected from drive pin 13 and the field coils 4, 5 are energized to drive the carriage over the junction until at position B-B the carriage picks up the drive chain of conveyer 3. When the carriage has to pass through the junction on the main line the drive pin is not disconnected from the main back conveyer chain and field coil 6 may be energized to assist the passage of the carriage. In a second arrangement, Fig. 4, the rail support structure 17 is extended to accommodate the separate vehicle 27 which is driven when armature 26 thereon reacts with coil 23, similar to coils 4, 5, Fig. 1. A finger 31 on the vehicle engages the carriage 36 to route it to the diverging track. The current to the field coils may be reversible to reciprocate the vehicle 27 back along its track to a position A-A to wait for the next carriage to be diverted or the vehicle can be driven in a closed loop, Fig. 3 (not shown), back to the position A-A.
