Abstract

1300321 Latches AISIN SEIKI CO Ltd 22 Jan 1970 [22 Jan 1969] 3218/70 Heading E2A A door latch mechanism for a vehicle comprises a base plate 1, a disc latch 19 having a plurality of peripheral recesses 18a, 18b, 18c, only one of which is adapted to engage a striker 21 cooperating with said mechanism and a rotatable pawl 15 situated adjacent said latch bolt to cooperate with said recesses, the pawl being capable of being rotated by movement of a first member 2, the movement of the first being transmitted to the pawl by means of an intermediate member 5, means 6 for displacing the intermediate member being provided so that when the intermediate member is displaced movement of the first member is not transmitted to the pawl. In the construction shown the latch and pawl are disposed in recess 17a, 17b in a mounting member 17 carried by the base plate and attached thereto by a lever member 16. The mounting member also has a third arc-shaped recess 17c which extends from the base of the recess 17a and contains a coil spring 20 which engages one end wall of the recess 17c and a pin fixed to the latch to bias. the latch to the releasing position. The pawl is fixed to a shaft 8 which extends through the mounting member and through the base plate 1 and on the opposite side of the base plate to the mounting member the shaft carries a releasing lever 7. The base plate also caries the first member 2 one arm 2c which is engageable by an outside handle to rotate the member, the movement being communicated to the lever 7 via the intermediate member 5 which is pivoted to an arm 2a of the member 2 and an end of which engages an arm 7c of the lever 7 to rotate it and so free the pawl from the latch bolt. The member 2 has another arm 2b which is connected to the inside handle via bell crank 11. Pivoted on the shaft 8 is the means to which is in the form of lever which can be moved between releasing and locking positions by a sill button connected to an aperture 6b via a link or via a key operated lock mechanism connected to an aperture 6c. The lever 6 carries a pin 10 which engages a slot 5a in the member 5 so that rotation of the lever 6 to the locking position moves the end of the member 5 away from the arm 7c of the lever 7 so that any movement of the member 2 is ineffective to rotate the lever 7. The lever 6 is held in each of its positions by a toggle spring 14. Should the lever 6 be left in the locking position while the door is open, closing the door rotates the lever 7 and an arm 7b of the lever 7 engages an arm. 5a of the member 5 to move the member 5 and hence the lever 6 to the releasing position however for keyless locking with the lever 6 in the locking position and the member 2 operated to the releasing position by the outside handle the arm 7d of the lever 7 is ineffective to move the member 5. The mounting member and the cover member are both slotted to enable the keeper to engage the latch and since the keeper includes a U- shaped portion through which a part of the latch extends an anti-burst feature is provided. The pawl holds the latch both in the latching position by engaging the notch 18a in a safety position by engaging the notch 18b and in the releasing position by engaging the notch 18c.
