Abstract
1301315 Protecting superheater tubes SULZER BROS Ltd 11 Sept 1970 [23 Sept 1969] 43633/70 Heading F4A When starting up steam generator 1 feedwater is pumped at 15 from degasser 16 to evaporator 4 and additionally through pipe 34 to superheater 5 at flow rates of approximately 15% and 35% respectively of full-load flow rate, thus ensuring that steam generation occurs in the evaporator before the superheater. The steam outlet valve 22 is closed and full working pressure is maintained by a device 32 through which the water returns via pipe 31 to degasser 16. The burner 6 is run at about 25% of full rate and when the working temperature is reached steam is generated in the evaporator 4 but is condensed in chamber 20 when it joins the feedwater entering the superheater from pipe 34. When the correct conditions are reached the superheater feedwater is cut off by valve 35 and device 32 is operated to rapidly release the pressure in the superheater through return line 31 causing intensive evaporation which effectively expels all the feedwater from the superheater. The firing rate and the feedwater supply are then increased and the working pressure raised by adjusting valve 32. In the operation of the embodiment shown, Fig. 1, steam is first passed via valve 22 through stage 23 of a turbine, then combined with the flue gases by mixer 25 and passed through stage 27 of the turbine. The turbine drives generator 9 and compressor 10 supplying air to burner 6. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the chamber 20 is replaced by a condenser (40) and the feedwater to the superheater is supplied between this and the superheater, the condensate being returned through a pipe (41) to the degasser 16. In a third embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the degasser is omitted and water is circulated between the condenser (40) and the evaporator 4 through pipe (42) by a pump (43). In addition the superheater is formed in two sections between which water is injected to control the temperature of the steam delivered by the second section.
