Abstract

1304856 Weighing apparatus; measuring force or weight W & T AVERY Ltd 20 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 41758/69 Headings G1N, G1W A load indicating apparatus comprises a resistant system and indicating means responsive to displacement of said system and is characterized in that the system comprises a primary resistant and a secondary resistant inter-connected so that the load is applied to both resistants, the resistants exhibiting respective mechanical hysteresis characteristics which are mutually compensating in their effect on the indicating means. The hysteresis characteristics of the resistants may either be of the same sign when the resistants are inter-connected so that a difference in magnitude of their respective displacements forms the indicated measure of magnitude of the load, or they may be opposite in sign when the resistants are inter-connected so that the algebraic sum of the values forms part of the measure of magnitude of the load. The primary and secondary resistants may be helical tension springs 11, 12 Figs. 3 and 4 and the springs linked end to end by a flexible band 14 passed around a pivotally mounted drum 15, carrying an indicating pointer 16. The primary resistant may be a tension spring 36 Fig. 5 connected to a lever 33 on one arm 35 thereof, the other arm 38 being divided into two parts 39 and 40 connected by a flexure strip 41 (the secondary resistant) to a rack 43 and pinion 44 device whereby angular movement of the lever 33 is shown against a dial 46. In a third embodiment, Fig. 6 pendulum units 53 act as the primary resistants and climb up ribbons 55 as the device is loaded, the upper ends of the ribbons being attached through a pair of bifurcated leaf springs 60 (the secondary resistants) to anchorage points on the frame 56. A fourth embodiment Fig. 7 (not shown) comprises a self indicating optical bench scale including a primary second order lever (70) fulcrummed on a rigid base (72) and linked to one arm of a secondary first order lever (74) the other arm being «broken», the two rigid parts being connected by a flexure strip (76) serving as a secondary resistant. In a modified form of the above embodiment. Fig.8 (not shown) a self-indicating counter scale is described. In a fifth embodiment Fig. 9 (not shown) the load to be measured is applied as a vertical upwards force through a ribbon (90) to a pendulum drum (91) carrying a pendulum (92) acting as the primary resistant, the drum mounting (94) being carried by a horizontal beam (96) connected to a flexure strip (97) acting as the secondary resistant. In a sixth embodiment Fig. 12 (not shown) a system using resistants with different hysteresis characteristics is utilized in which strain gauges embodied in the system are connected into a Wheatstone bridge Fig. 14 (not shown) whereby an electrical output proportional to the applied load results.
