Abstract
1304886 Cathode-ray tube displays ING C OLIVETTI & C SpA 18 May 1970 [19 May 1969] 24014/70 Heading H4T Data terminal equipment for interrogation and reply includes a manually operated keyboard 31 (Fig. 1) which controls the equipment via a control unit 3 such that information may be entered into a recirculating store 4 (such information being displayed on a cathode-ray tube 10 in 16 lines each of 56 characters from the keyboard 31, from a peripheral input unit such as a card reader 125, or, from a remote data processor connected at input 11 the control unit also operating to supply information from the data processor to the store and on command from either the keyboard, the data processor or the card reader, to condition the equipment to cause the contents of the store to be supplied to a peripheral output unit such as a printer 121. This arrangement is stated to provide greater flexibility in respect of connection to peripheral input and output units than known terminal equipment allows. The store 4 comprises a recirculating magnetostrictive delay line capable of storing during each cycle T (Fig. 2) 1024 digit periods (store cells C) each of which comprises 10 bit periods D1 … D10. Such character is represented by 7 bits (D3 to D9) the bits Dl, D2 being employed as service bits during writing and reading cycles respectively. In the production of the display on tube 7 the character representative bits are converted to analogue values in D/A converter 54 (Fig. 5) and employed to position the beam of a character generating tube 55 on the corresponding character which is printed on a matrix 59 and such character is then scanned by generators 61, 63 to produce corresponding video signals which are displayed on tube 67 (equivalent to tube 10, Fig. 1) by brightness modulation of a line scanned raster. The logic circuitry of the control unit is described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown).
