Abstract

1305476 Tractor/trailer brake systems F W PETTIT Ltd 27 Aug 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 55170/70 Addition to 1177082 Heading F2F The parent Specification, especially Fig. 4 thereof, describes an hydraulic brake control arrangement for the brakes of a trailer unit in which fluid from pump 6 is controlled by valve 20 operated by pedal 4 and a manually operated valve 27, 28 diverts fluid to other hydraulic devices on the vehicle and a switch 30 gives an alarm at 32 on failure of pressure. The trailer is connected by flexible coupling 11a, 11b to drive piston 9 which transmits force to a master cylinder 16, 17 feeding the brakes 5. According to the present invention, there is further provided an hydraulic accumulator 61 fed from main pressure line 63 through non-return valve 62, and a manually controlled valve 65 enables this accumulator to be switched on to the trailer cylinder 8 to provide several (diminishing) braking actions. An alarm switch 66 is also connected to the alarm circuit 32, and the fail-safe cylinder, loaded by spring-biased lever 37, is also energized from the accumulator while this is pressurized and still connected. If desired, (Fig. 2, not shown), each brake 5 may be fed from a separate cylinder, both cylinders being operated through a common linkage by the fail-safe system. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the trailer cylinder 8 has an additional free piston to the left of the piston 9, and normally braking pressure is fed between these pistons to drive the piston 9 to the right. When the manually operated valve 65 is operated, pressure from reservoir 61 is fed to the end of the free piston so that this pushes on the piston 9 to apply the brake as before. Moreover, the trailer brakes may each have a separate cylinder, each with such a free piston in it. In a further modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the operation of the manual valve 65 serves to direct pressure to the fail-safe cylinder 53 and to discharge it to brake the trailer under the action of the fail-safe spring 54.
