Abstract
1311173 Welding by pressure; welding by fusion; weld trimming A D SMITH CORP 25 Aug 1970 [25 Aug 1969] 40892/70 Headings B3L and B3R Apparatus for welding abutting metal edges 3, 4, especially longitudinal seam edges of a pipe blank 1 emerging from a forming mill, comprises a resistance welding unit 5 for performing an initial weld and an electron beam welding unit 6 for refining and completing the weld. Resistance welding unit.-This is supported from a rail 14, and includes an HF power unit 15 connected via cables 16, surrounded by depending shield 17, to contact electrodes 11. The latter are arranged to slide relative to the blank 1 and to feed current to respective edges upstream of an apex point 8 (Fig. 2) where the edges are pressed into contact by pinch rolls 7. Spacing of the edges upstream of apex 8 is achieved by a spacer 12 mounted on a blank guide shoe 13. Plastic working of the heated edges 3, 4 causes material to be upset along the external and internal pipe surfaces along the seam (Fig. 3, not shown). Electron beam welding unit.-Located downstream of the resistance wealding unit 5, the electron beam welding unit 6 directs a beam 23 through an orifice 20 to perform the final weld while the seam is still hot and, preferably, plastic. Thus any undercutting occurs in the upset material, while any occluded impurities can escape from the weld. In the unit shown the pipe is welded in an ambient atmosphere environment, though for other applications medium a high vacua may be used. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), a filler wire feed mechanism (31) is provided for feeding filler wire to the electron beam weld area. The cold wire can include a deoxidizer agent. A shield (42) into which argon or helium can be supplied to provide an inert gas atmosphere in the weld area is also provided. Alternatively, air can be blown into the enclosure to blow scraps of foreign matter away from the weld. In another modification (Fig. 6, not shown), means are provided to overcome any lateral deviations of the beam 23 from the centre of the weld seam. A sensor transducer (38) and servo control (39) provide this function. The latter control may control a lens to deflect the beam a desired amount but preferably the electron gun is itself moved laterally to reposition the beam. For this purpose the gun is laterally movable on tracks (40). The sensor may be a probe or infrared device. Hot weld flash removal is performed by a trimming device (Fig. 1) comprising tools 29, 30.
