Abstract
1312876 Recording and playback COMPAGNIE INTERNATIONALE POUR L’INFORMATIQUE 14 July 1971 [15 July 1970] 33087/71 Heading G5R Tape is loaded/unloaded in a recorder by an automatically controlled pneumatic system. In the arrangement shown, suction is initially applied to the hub of the take up spool 3 so that the tape end will bind to the spool when merely brought close to it. Suction is then applied to the upstream chamber 4 to cause a loop to be formed therein; the downstream chambre 6 is meanwhile operated at reduced suction, but when the tape blocks a lamp/photo-cell path 210/110 the output signal resulting is used to cause a similar loop to be formed in chamber 6. Loading terminates when a mark on the tape reflects light from lamp 120 to photo-cell 121. For unloading, the tape is run at high speed until the reflecting mark is in the operative position whereupon the speed is reduced and the chambers vented. The signal from photo-cell 110 as the tape leaves chamber 4 is used to terminate the unloading. Linear tape position sensors (e.g. 25, Fig. 2, not shown) function in servocontrolled spool drive systems (Fig. 6, not shown) to maintain constant loop lengths in normal operation of the recorder. The electrically controlled air-valve system is described with reference to, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the control circuitry with reference to, Fig. 7 (not shown).
