1318562 7 – Azidoacetylaminocephalosporanic acid derivatives CIBA-GEIBY AG 3 June 1970 [6 June 1969] 26779/70 Heading C2A The invention comprises 7 – azidoacetylaminocephalosporanic acid derivatives of Formula I in which R is H, hydroxyl esterified by a carboxylic acid in which ester O may be replaced by S (except the acetoxy group), an unsubstituted or N-substituted carbamoyloxy group in which oxygen may be replaced by sulphur, or a quaternary amino group, or a salt thereof. The compounds are prepared by (a) reacting a compound of Formula II in which Z is a reactive esterified hydroxyacetyl residue and R1 is H, OH or esterified OH (in which the ester oxygen may be replaced by a sulphur atom), with a metal azide, (b) acylating a compound of Formula II in which Z is H and R1 is H, OH or an esterified OH (in which ester O may be replaced by S) with the group N 3 -CH 2 -CO- and (c) a resulting compound obtained according to (a) or (b), and in which R1 represents the acetoxy group is converted to a compound in which R1 is a free hydroxyl group or into a compound of Formula I in which R is a quaternary amino group, or a compound in which R1 is a free OH group is converted into a compound of Formula I containing an ester group other than acetory (in which oxygen atoms may be replaced by sulphur atoms) or an unsubstituted or N-substituted carbamyloxy group in which O may be replaced by S atoms. The carboxyl group of process (a) or (b) may be protected by an eliminable protective group and, in a final step, this group is split off in known manner to produce the compounds of Formula I. Salts are formed with alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, ammonia or organic bases such as procaine. The 7 – azidoacetylaminocephalosporanic acid or salts thereof may be incorporated in veterinary or pharmaceutical preparations and animal feed stuffs.
