Abstract
1324900 Metal rosinates HERCULES Inc 29 June 1971 [1 July 1970] 30511/71 Heading C4D [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises zinc or zinc-calcium salts of a partial rosin ester in which Zn constitutes 6-10À8% by wt. of the zinc salt, or 3À1-6À1% by wt. of the zinc-calcium salt and Ca 0À9-2À1% by wt. thereof, and the ester is derived from rosin and 5-60% equivalent weight of a dihydric or C 1 -C 4 monohydric alcohol. The salts have melting points between 80‹ and 170‹ C. The term «rosin» includes natural wood, gum and tall oil rosins, dispro. portionated, hydrogenated and polymerized rosin, and rosin acids. Partial esterification is effected in an inert atmosphere at 150-250‹ C. for a monohydric and 260-275‹ C. for a dihydric alcohol. The rosin ester is then reacted in a fused state or in solution with In the solution method the solvent may be toluene, xylene, benzene, mineral spirits, heptane, and/or naphtha, the solids concentration 30-75% by wt., and the temperature 60- 190‹ C. In the examples hydrogenated wood rosin is esterified with diethylene or triethylene glycol; an acetic acid catalyst is used in the salt-forming step. The salts are useful as rubber tackifiers and for rubber-base adhesives.
