Abstract
1332024 Fuel system LNG SERVICES Inc 22 Feb 1971 5140/71 Headings F1B and F1G A fuel system for a power plant e.g. an I.C. engine in a land vehicle comprises a tank 14 containing cryogenic liquid e.g. liquefied natural gas (LNG) which is conveyed through vaporizing means 22, 32, to the power plant. The first stage vaporizer 22 consists of tubes 24 in an air filter 26 from which liquid and vapour passes to a vapourizing area 36 of a second stage vaporizer 32 by way of orifice 34 controlled by diaphragm 38, so that pressure at 36 is reduced from tank pressure. Water or exhaust gas is circulated through chamber 46 to complete vaporization of the fuel. Chamber 56 is connected via outlet 54 to a carburetter venturi, so that as engine speed increases above idle a diaphragm 60 is forced down by atmospheric pressure exerted through a vent hole 58 and opens valve 66, allowing fuel to pass to the carburetter for admixture with air. Pilot orifice 48 is provided for supplying idle and starting fuel. A vapour phase controller 80 is provided so that if the pressure in the tank 14 exceeds a set point vapour will flow from the upper part of the tank into fuel line 20. The fuel system can be modified to drive a gas turbine. The cold available in the vaporization process can be used for air conditioning or as an additional coolant for the engine or exhaust.
