Abstract
1332424 Coking Oils HARVEY ALUMINUM (Inc) 13 Dec 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 57828/71 Heading C5E Sponge coke, i.e. porous coke having a low density, is made from a feedstock which produces shot coke in a conventional coking operation and has an asphaltene content (A.C.) above about 13% by weight by blending with it sufficient of a hydrocarbons bottoms which has an A.C. below 8% b.w. to ensure an A.C. for the blend below 13% b.w., and preferably below 10% b.w. and coking the blend, e.g. by delayed coking. The initial feedstock may be an atmospheric or vacuum distilled virgin residual, a solvent extracted residual or a hydrocarbon asphalt, and the bottoms may be tars and residual aromatic oils produced in the thermal cracking of catalytically cracked cycle stock, deasphalted hydrocarbons, solid or liquid residues from hydrocarbon synthesis, residual aliphatic hydrocarbons of a crude oil and aromatic coal tar hydrocarbons.
