Abstract
1338677 Automatic control of speed GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 20746/71 Heading G3R In a digital system as for controlling the output of an A. C. power-source 1 Fig. 1 to a D.C. motor 2 in which oppositely poled thyristors or SCRs 3(a-c), 4(a-c) are fired with a controlled phase delay, firing circuits 5(a-c) are repeatedly loaded according to the digital output of a digital error generator 7 at times determined by a phase detector 9, and continue to count pulses from a clock generator 10, to give a signal firing the relevant thyristor when a predetermined count is reached. The phase detector 9 controls the loading of the input from the error generator 7 by signals on lines 9(a-c)-12(a-c) and also acts as a square wave generator and detector whereby the registers of counters in the firing circuits 5(a-c) are set either to a positive count and counting up for the positive phase or to a «two’s complement» setting, counting down for the negative phase. Outputs on lines 15(a-c) 16(a-c) from the phase detector 9 also determine which each pair of thyristors 3(a-c) or 4(a-c) is to be fired. The thyristors are arranged to start firing only during the last 120 degrees of each half cycle under maximum error signal conditions, the clock 10 therefor having a frequency which permits a delay of 120 degrees before the full count is reached. The arrangement also permits the thyristors to conduct for 60 degrees in the negative half of each phase cycle to permit dynamic motor braking. Control of the output from «phase detector» unit 9 for each phase can therefore be controlled by the change in polarity occurring in the preceding phase which occurs 120 degrees earlier at a time when the error signal for the following phase must be loaded. Alternative systems are referred to in which the digital error generator 7 may operate either by comparing digital numbers or pulse frequencies representing speeds and generated by the command generator 6 and a feed back device 8 associated with the load 2.
