Abstract
1338954 Electrically heated hair curlers TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 19 April 1971 [27 Jan 1970] 20402/71 Heading A4V [Also in Division H5] An electrically heated device comprises an element, composed of a conductive-filled crystalline polymer having a positive temperature coefficient of resistance above an anomaly point, which acts both as a self-regulating heater and as a heat storing means. The illustrated example is a hair curler which has a cylindrical outer shell 12 with a plurality of fingers 14 extending outwards therefrom. The element 22 is a hollow cylindrical moulding which may be made of a polyolefin filled with carbon black and has a conducting coating on its inner and outer faces. These coatings may be of electroless nickel or electroplated tin. A cylindrical sleeve 24 which may be of copper is pressed into the bore of the element and is in electrical contact with the pin 28 by the member 26 which may be formed integrally with sleeve 24. The outer face of the element is surrounded by a conducting sleeve 32 which is bent over at 34 to enclose pin 44. To increase the electrical contact the space between the plate 42 and base 34 may be filled with solder or the plate may be connected electrically to the conducting rim 38. Annulus 40 is made of an insulating material. In use the hair curler is heated electrically. Below the crystalline melting point of the polymer the resistance is constant but once the crystalline structure is broken down the resistance of the element increases, which effectively limits the current when the operating temperature is reached obviating the need for thermostatic control. The heat storing capabilities of the element are enhanced by the latent heat associated with the phase change from the crystalline to the amorphous polymer.
