Abstract
1339020 Walking beam furnaces KOPPERSWISTRA-OFENBAU GmbH 29 Dec 1970 [21 March 1970] 61578/70 Heading F4B A walking beam in a furnace is actuated by two frames 1, 7 arranged one below the other and both longitudinally movable relative to each other and to the furnace hearth, vertical movement of the walking beam 8 being effected by ramps 6 which bear on wheels 5 carried by the lower frame 1. The lower frame is carried on wheels 2 running on rails and is moved by a rack 4 engaged by a stationary drive. The upper frame is controlled by a rack 9 engaged by a gear-wheel having a magnetic brake for preventing longitudinal movement of the upper frame, consequent motion relative to the lower frame 1 causing the upper frame to rise or fall. A number of walking beams are disposed one beside the other to be actuated individually or in synchronism, the driving gear-wheels of all the lower frames being on one shaft, a rocking pinion being provided for each gear-wheel to couple it to the associated rack as desired. A further gear-wheel 23 engaged with the rack 9 is mounted on a vertically slidable guide rod 24 carrying a rack 26. Pinion 27 engaged thereby is connected by shaft 28 and links 29 to sand seals 30. When the walking beam is in the lowered position i.e. at the same height as the fixed beams of the furnace, the sand seals are raised into their operative positions. The seals are lowered to an inoperative position before any longitudinal movement of the walking beam takes place.
