Abstract

1340876 Gas separation BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd [trading as EDWARDS HIGH VACUUM INTERNATIONAL] 21 June 1971 [24 June 1970] 30663/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division Fl] A vacuum apparatus includes a vacuum pump 10 and a sorption trap 2 for sorbing hydrocarbons backstreaming from the pump, in which the sorption trap includes a metal in its solid phase consisting predominantly of palladium, platinum or nickel, effective at or above room temperature to promote bonds of a chemical nature between itself and incident hydrocarbon molecules. The metal sorbent may be in pelleted form and be deposited on a porous or fibrous support material having a large surface area. Preferred support materials include porous carbon, carbon fibres in a ply or woven form, diatomaceous earth and alloy sponge. If the support material is carbon fibre the heating may be accomplished by passing an electric current therethrough.
