Abstract
1341161 Treating non-graphitic carbon fibres UNION CARBIDE CORP 24 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3211/72 Heading C1A Non-graphitic carbon fibre, i.e. carbon fibre having an essentially amorphous structure and obtained by heating below 2000‹ C., is given improved tensile stength and improved bonding characteristics when utilized in a matrix of a plastics material by being heated in an atmosphere consisting of chlorine and oxygen in an amount of at least 60 volume per cent of chlorine and the balance, i.e. up to 40 volume per cent of oxygen at a temperature of from 1250‹ to 1450‹ C. for a time sufficient to effect a weight loss by the fibre of at least 0À3%. The carbon fibre is derived from a polyacrylonitrile fibre, where the polyacrylonitrile may be a homopolymer or a co-polymer containing at least 85% by wt. of acrylonitrile polymer. The carbon fibre may be heated for a period of from 0-4 to 4 seconds and the weight loss may be as much as 30%. Preferred compositions of the atmosphere are given. The carbon fibre may be derived by heating a polyacrylonitrile fibre at a temperature below 1600‹ C. All or part of the chlorine may be replaced by bromine. The fibres so formed may be coated with resin, e.g. an epoxy resin and formed into a composite.
