Abstract
1341384 Aqueous dispersion polymerization BP CHEMICALS Ltd 14 Jan 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 5798/70 Headings C3G and C3P A first monomer(s), other than vinyl chloride, that gives rise to a polymer having a glass transition temperature above 10‹ C., is polymerized under aqueous emulsion polymerization conditions, the polymer formed is allowed to absorb a second monomer(s), which may be the same or different from the first, either before or after transforming the emulsion system into a suspension system and the absorbed monomer(s) is then polymerized under suspension polymerization conditions in the presence of a suspension stabilizer system. In Examples (1-7) an ABS latex was made by polymerizing a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of an aqueous polybutadiene latex and the potassium salt of a disproportionated rosin acid, then a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile was used as the second monomers, acetic acid as destabilizer, polyvinyl alcohol as suspending agent and lauryl peroxide was used as a catalyst for the suspension polymerization: the examples varied the order of additions of materials. In Example (8) an aqueous polystyrene latex was made by emulsion polymerization with a sodium lauryl sulphate emulsifier, then styrene was used as the second monomer, calcium chloride as destabilizer, polyvinyl alcohol as suspending agent and benzoyl peroxide as catalyst.
