Abstract

1341408 Semi-conductor devices ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 61191/70 Heading H1K A semi-conductor device in which a semiconductor body 3 is mounted on a side face of one of a pair of spaced, aligned elongate leads 1, 2 of rectangular cross-section and is electrically connected to the other lead, e.g. by an Au wire 4, is strengthened by the provision of at least one insulating body secured to one side of both leads 1, 2 and bridging the gap between the leads. In the embodiment shown a quartz block 5 is secured across the gap on the lower face of the leads 1, 2 and two quartz cylinders or tubes 7 are secured across the gap on the upper face of the leads 1, 2, one on each side of the body 3 and wire 4. In certain cases either the block 5 or the cylinder(s) 7 may be omitted. A further quartz block 6 between the adjacent ends of the leads 1, 2 reduces the capacitance between the leads, but an air gap may be provided instead. The quartz blocks, &c., 5, 6, 7 are secured to the leads by a coating 8 which protects the body 3 and is surrounded by an outer casing 9. Before application of the coating 8 the blocks 5, 6, 7 are secured temporarily to the leads 1, 2 using small quantities of the coating resin as an adhesive. The leads 1, 2, may be cut from a lead frame.
