Abstract

1342614 Bonding polyimide articles; seaming MOSKOVSKY AVIATSIONNY TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT 14 Oct 1971 47754/71 Headings B5N and B5K A method of chemically bonding polyimide articles comprises treating clean surfaces of the articles to be bonded with a solution of a low molecular weight polyfunctional substance capable of reacting chemically with the functional groups of the polyimides, air drying the treated articles, placing the articles in close contact, subjecting the articles to heat and pressure to form chemical bonds between the polyimides and the polyfunctional substance and cooling the bonded articles under the same pressure. The polyimide articles may be in the form of films, fabrics or moulded parts and may be derived from pyromellitic dianhydride and either 4 : 41-diamino diphenyl ether or diamino diphenyl sulphide. The polyfunctional substance which may be applied by brushing, sponging, pouring, dipping or spraying may be a polyamine, a polyisocyanate, a polybasic acid, an anhydride or a chloroanhydride of a polybasic acid, an ester or an hydroxy compound and may be applied on a volatile solvent, e.g. acetone. The, examples describe the laminating or lap jointing of polyimide films using as the polyfunctional substance: (1) hexamethylene diamine; (2) hexamethylene diisocyanate; (3) triphenyl- 4 : 41 : 411 triisocyanate; (4) n-phenylene diamine and (5) adipic acid.
