Abstract
1342671 Expanded microspheres DOW CHEMICAL CO 28 May 1971 [28 May 1970] 17953/71 Headings C3C and C3P Expanded synthetic resinous microspheres are obtained by (1) depositing on a moving surface an exposed layer of expandable microspheres (prepared, for example, by suspension (co)polymerization in the presence of a volatile organic expanding agent), the deposition being effected from a dispersion of expandable microspheres in a non-solvent containing a flocculating agent for the expanded microspheres, (2) carrying the exposed layer through a zone in which the moving surface is heated from a location adjacent the surface and opposite from the microspheres, the heating being to a temperature and for a time to dry and expand the microspheres, a flowing gas being simultaneously contacted with the drying and expanding microspheres, and (3) removing the dried expanded microspheres from the moving surface. The flowing gas, e.g. hot air, is preferably brought into concurrent flow contact with the microspheres for the first part of the heating step, i.e. the drying stage, and into countercurrent flow contact for the second part, i.e. the expanding stage. The moving surface is suitably a PTFE coated woven glass fibre endless conveyer belt. A long list of suitable flocculants is given. The microspheres are suitably of vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer, vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer, polymethylmethacrylate or poly-o-chlorostyrene. The expanded microspheres prepared above may be used to make synthetic foams in which they are incorporated in a curing matrix, e.g. a polyester or epoxy resin.
