Abstract
1346616 Vehicle suspension dampers SOC ANON AUTOMOBILES CITROEN 23 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 10981/71 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] A restriction 7 in a passage 6 in an hydraulic piston-cylinder damper (Fig. 2, not shown but see Division F2) of a vehicle suspension is adjusted automatically in response to the turning speed or angle of the vehicle wheels, through the intermediary of pivoted levers, hydraulic transmission or Bowden cable 22. If the steering wheel 9 is turned quickly to turn the vehicle wheel 8, the movement of a piston 13 in a fluidfilled bore 14 of a device 15 attached to the vehicle frame forces fluid through one of passageways 17, 18 into a further fluid-filled bore 16 of the device 15. The piston 19 is therefore moved by the fluid against the bias of a spring 20a or 20b and moves the Bowden cable to rotate a lever 21 and increase the resistance to flow through the passage 6 offered by the restriction 7. If the bend continues, the steering and road wheels remain in the same position, and the piston 19 returns to its initial position under the action of the spring 20a or 20b, the fluid passing through a calibrated aperture 19a in the piston, and the resistance offered by the restriction 7 returns to normal. When the steering wheel is returned to the straight-line position, there is again a transfer of fluid from the bore 14 to the bore 16, causing a temporary increase in the damping of the suspension, which is all the greater, the faster the movement of the steering wheel. To obtain instead an adjustment of damping which depends on the angle of turning of the wheels 8, the aperture 19a is omitted.
