Abstract
1346851 Glass-metal and metal oxide mixtures MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 21 May 1971 16375/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A varistor is manufactured by applying to a support 1, e.g. of alumina, a mixture 2 of finely divided ZnO and glass frit and firing the mixture to drive off any liquid vehicle present and to melt the glass frit so as to form a solid layer of ZnO in a glass binder. Electrodes 3a, 3b are provided, either both on top of the layer 2 as shown or with one electrode deposited directly on to the support 1 before application of the ZnO/glass frit mixture. Ag, Pt, Ti, Ni, Au, Al, Cu or Zn are mentioned as suitable electrode materials, but the preferred electrodes are applied as silver paint in a glass frit, the preferred glass being specified. Suitable glasses for the frit mixed with ZnO for the layer 2 are borosilicate, lead borosilicate, bismuth borosilicate or zinc lead borate, preferred compositions being specified. The ZnO, which is present as 30-95% by weight of the mixture, may include as an additive from 0À1 to 8 mol. per cent of Bi 2 O 3 , PbO or BaO.
