Abstract
1348054 Extruded roadstones ASSOCIATED PORTLAND CEMENT MFRS Ltd 26 July 1972 [26 April 1971] 11291/71 Heading B5A A bauxite roadstone having a high resistance to polishing and a good abrasion resistance, is produced by ram extruding a moist plastic mass of particulate bauxite at a moisture content and extrusion rate which results in disruption of the extruded surface, to produce surface irregularities, which are retained during sintering of the extrudate and subsequent breaking up into the roadstone. The extrudate may be of circular, rectangular or square section, and the surface disruption is assisted by a low ratio of extrusion orifice length to depth i.e. 1/16 : 1 and by a sharp edge at the entry to the orifice. The Fig. denotes plots of extrusion pressure (P) and shear rates (R), with the curves C-K being respectively for higher water content, the desired surface irregularities being in the range between curves A and C, and ranges to the left of curve C representing brittle fracture upon extrusion at low moisture content. A table is given relating the particle size distribution of siliceous bauxite and its moisture content, and its extrusion pressure and shear rate, to the degree of surface irregularities obtained with a specific die. The examples relate to the measurements of the polishing and abrasion resistance of extrusion at specified particles size distributions comprising; (1) ferruginous bauxite with 7À5% Blue London Clay as plasticizer; (2) ferruginous bauxite extruded, with water, as a block which is crushed subsequent to sintering, in comparison with extrusion by the invention using 1% neutralized ammonium alginate as plasticizer; (3) siliceous bauxite ground and extruded, using 0À1-0À2% carboxymethyl cellulose, or neutralized sodium alginate for coarser grades extruded, compared with the same materials conventionally extruded. The extrudates may incorporate 1 % of P 2 O 5 in aqueous solution.
