Abstract
1349365 Detecting fluid velocity BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 27 May 1971 [29 May 1970] 17477/71 Heading H4D A laser Doppler velocimeter for determining the velocity Fig. 3, of an area of fluid, comprises a laser producing a single beam, an optical system, e.g. mirrors S 1 , S 2 and Kosters prism P, splitting the beam into two parallel beams I and II, an objective L 1 focusing and directing the beams on to the investigated area of fluid and also receiving back the Doppler frequency shifted scattered light and directing it, via focusing lens L 2 , aperture plate B 1 , lens L 3 and interference filter F, on to a photomultiplier detector Ph. By this arrangement, all the elements are coaxial and compactness is achieved. If k i1 and k i2 are the vectors of the beams I and II, k i1 and k i2 are the corresponding unit vectors, the Doppler frequency shifts of the beams are # d1 and # d2 and the wavelength of the incident beam is # 0 , then the output of the photo-detector Ph, contains a Doppler difference frequency component ##d given by the scalar product The photo-detector may be a semi-conductor diode. The beam splitter may be a thick plate PG, Fig. 4, having half silver half-face HV and full silvered half-face V. Beam II result from the passage of the incident beam through the plate and beam I from reflection on faces HV and V.
