Abstract
1349713 Measuring traction power electrically SUNTESTER Ltd 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 15225/70 Headings G1A G1N and G1W Motor vehicle testing apparatus comprising the combination of a chassis dynamometer 2, means for generating a signal dependent on the power absorbed by the brake 8 of the dynamometer, means for generating acceleration-power signal dependent on the product of the acceleration of the dyanamometer rollers 4, 6 and the speed of rotation of the rollers and means 42 for summing the braking-power signal and the acceleration-power signal to derive a signal dependent upon the traction power output of a vehicle being tested. The apparatus is applied to measuring tractive power of a vehicle wheel 7 the dynamometer rollers 4, 6 being driven by the wheel, the former coupled to the rotor of the eddy current brake 8 of which the stator is pivotable against springs 12 under braking torque and which stator carries an arm 14 with a forked end 16 in which a perforated disc 18 is mounted for rotation by engagement with perforated disc 20 rotatably driven by roller 6. A lamp and a photo-cell 22 act with disc 18 to provide a pulse train of which the frequency represents the product of rotary speed of the wheel and displacement of the disc 18 from the axis of disc 20 due to braking torque which product is therefore representative of traction power (wheel speed times braking torque). Similary a lamp acts with disc 20 and photo-cell 24 to produce a signal representing wheel speed and a further lamp with disc 21, photo-cell 25 and converter 29 to derive a signal representing speed of roller 4 which signal is fed to a high gain amplifier 32 which, with switches S1, S2, S3 at position 2 or 3 compares the speed signal with a signal from store 36 and controls by controller 10 the brake to equalise the input signals to the amplifier. The stored signal is a ramp signal from circuit 38 or 40 and produces a constant acceleration or deceleration respectively. With the switches at position 1 the stored signal is set to a value corresponding to the speed of rotation of the roller 4. It is stated that the power output signal and the speed signal may be applied to Y, X inputs of an X-Y plotter. In an alternative arrangement a tacho-generator is driven by one of the rollers to produce a speed-representative signal across the track of a potentiometer of which the wiper is positioned in accordance with braking torque developed by the dynamometer.
