Abstract

1349924 Controlling winches CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 8 May 1972 [9 June 1971] 21418/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A reversible winch comprises a power input shaft 10 coupled to and winch drum 47 through a power input clutch 11, bevel gearing 15, 16, 17, first and second winch clutches 20, 25 and reduction gearing 33, the bevel gears 16-17 which are driven in opposite directions of rotation by the bevel gear 15, being selectively coupled through the clutches 20-25 to a shaft 19 forming the input for the reduction gear 33, to determine the direction of winch rotation. The clutches 11, 20, 25 are of the friction disc type, the power input clutch being normally disengaged but engaged by the supply of pressurized fluid thereto, and the winch clutches 20, 25 being normally engaged but disengaged by pressurized fluid. The clutches are controlled by a manual selector 50 which through the hydraulic system shown selects either a neutral position (N) whereby the winch clutches 20, 25 are engaged and the power input clutch 11 is disengaged and the drive shaft 19 becomes locked, a reel-out position (O) whereby one winch clutch is disengaged and the input clutch is engaged and the drum 47 is driven to pay out cable, a reel-in position (I) whereby the other winch clutch only is disengaged and the input clutch is engaged to reel in cable on the drum, and a free spool position (F) wherein all the clutches are disengaged for free drum rotation. Movement of the handle 50 simultaneously mechanically controls the spools within a pressure control valve 57 and a selector control valve 58. The system is supplied with pressurized fluid from a sump 60 by a positive displacement pump 61 driven by the engine driving the power input shaft 10, the fluid being fed through a directional control servo valve 65 to the selector valve 58 for supply to the clutches 11, 20, 25 and to a pressure modulating valve 75. The latter is a spring biased spool valve operated by fluid pressure obtained from the pressure control valve 57. A lubrication system 81 for the apparatus is supplied with fluid from the pressure control valve 57. Inching control of the winch by means of slipping the clutches by restricted movement of the spool of the pressure control valve 57, can only be achieved if system pressure is low due to low speed of the engine driving the pump 61, since with high system pressure the valve 65, constantly communicates full system pressure to the clutches irrespective of the position of the pressure control valve 57. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), the drive system omits the pressure modulating valve and includes a normally engaged, fluid pressure disengaged brake for the input shaft associated with the winch clutches, the brake being slippable to permit inching control of the winch.
