Abstract

1352124 Locating faults in electric cables ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 30 June 1971 [8 July 1970] 33239/70 Heading G1U The distance to a fault in a power cable is determined by inducing resonance in the cable between the fault and one end of the cable, and determining the resonant frequency. The resonance is induced between the fault 19 and the far end 16 by shock exciting the cable at its near end 14, either by discharging a capacitor 10 into the cable Fig. 1 or by leaving a charged capacitor connected to the cable until the fault breaks down Fig. 7, (not shown). The frequency of the induced oscillation is determined Fig. 4 by detecting (34) the negative-going zero crossings and using these to gate (49) clock pulses (54) to a counter 55 for, say, four consecutive cycles of the oscillation. To check against spurious operation of the gate, the test may then be repeated for, say, two consecutive cycles. The zero crossings detector 34 exhibits hysteresis to minimise erroneous gate actuation due to noise, and the gate 49 is not opened for the first four cycles of the oscillation to allow time for initial transients to die down. Two methods of calibrating the frequencymeasuring circuit are described. (i) If the wave propagation velocity in the cable is known, a fixed-frequency oscillator 30 is used to open the gate 49 for a fixed period, and the clock frequency adjusted to give a required reading on the counter. (ii) If the velocity is not known, the clock pulse generator is adjusted on the basis of tests made on a good conductor of the cable of known length. Since neither method of calibration will be entirely accurate owing to the dependence of the velocity on the frequency of the oscillation in the cable, in use the clock frequency may be swept between the values determined by (i) and (ii).
