Abstract

1352178 Power steering apparatus A E BISHOP 19 April 1971 [29 Jan 1970] 21633/71 Heading B7H A power steering apparatus comprises a steering input shaft 11 drivingly connected to a cross-shaft 13 which actuates a known steering linkage requiring an increase in torque as the cross-shaft rotates from a central position, a power motor 40, and a variable ratio gear connection 42, 43 having a pitch line of varying radius providing an increased drive ratio as the shaft 13 moves from the central position. The shaft 11, carrying a steering wheel (12), Fig. 4 (not shown), rotates a worm 25, Fig. 2, through a torsion bar 26 and loose spline 24. The worm 25 drives a sleeve valve 23 which supplies the power motor 40. A cam follower 29 engages the worm 25 to provide a high steering ratio in the straight ahead position and a decreased ratio in the displaced position. A rack 42 engaging a gear 43 integral with the cross-shaft 13 is actuated by piston 41 of motor 40. Gear teeth 43a, 42a are provided with a varying ratio to produce a required increase in torque of the shaft 13 when rotated from its central position.
