Abstract

1352212 Automatic exchange equipment COM-U-TROL CORP 8 July 1971 [9 July 1970] 32214/71 Heading H4K A caller can gain a connection to a central substation, e.g. his office, through the telephone network and by means of a portable encoder transmit a first code signal to a transfer unit to cause an outgoing line to the exchange to be seized whereupon the caller can cause a call to be set up as if he were located at the central substation. The portable encoder generates tones which are used for causing seizure of the outgoing line, dialling and release of outgoing line alone or release of all connections to the transfer unit. As shown, the central substation is connected to the telephone system 30 through a plurality of lines of which 36, 38 are two. These two lines are interconnected by a transfer unit such that if line 38 is free a ringing signal on line 36, emanating from a call at a remote location 10, will cause trip ring-in 44 to operate. Cessation of ringing tone indicates to the remote caller that line 38 is available and a seizure tone consisting of frequencies f 1 and f 2 is transmitted through line 36. Detection of this tone by tone detector 46 causes the seize unit 48 to loop line 38 by relay contacts 128 and dialling tone is returned to the caller. Dialling is carried out on encoder 18 and bursts of tone f 1 are transmitted corresponding to the digits dialled at 20. These tones are detected and operate a relay 128 in dial-out unit 50 to provide loop disconnect pulses on line 38. When the call is finished tones f 1 and f 2 can be sent again which operates radial unit 52 to release and seize line 38 so that dial tone is again obtained and a further call can be made. Alternatively tones f 1 and f 3 can be sent to operate release circuit 54 which releases both lines 36 and 38. The encoder 18 is a portable battery operated device and uses a manually operated switch 22 for selecting which pair of frequencies are to be transmitted by loud-speaker 28 and received in the telephone equipment through handset microphone 14.
