Abstract

1352618 Pigments for latices UNION CARBIDE CORP 6 July 1971 31594/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division C4] A pigment dispersion or paint composition comprises liberated, short fibre, cationic colloidally-dispersed chrysotile asbestos fibres having anionic pigment particles held along the lengths thereof, the fibres having a specific surface area of 60-80 m.2/g., a reflectance of 74-77% and a magnetic content of less than 0À60%. The liberated asbestos fibres are obtained from asbestos ore by an hydraulic beneficiation process in which an initial wet grinding and screening is followed by wet mechanical and/or chemical treatment to liberate the individual fibres from bundles thereof, and a further wet grinding to the desired degree of liberation, indicated by the surface area. The anionic pigment may be titanium dioxide, zinc sulphide, zinc oxide, basic white lead silicate, lithopone, iron oxide or antimony oxide, and/or an extender pigment, e.g. whiting, bentonite or other clays, talc, magnesium aluminium silicate, mica, calcium silicate, silica or barium sulphide. The pigmented asbestos usually constitutes 1-25% by wt. of the total solids of the dispersion. The dispersions can be prepared by (I) a pellet or open fibre process or (II) a filter cake process. In (I) a liberated asbestos slurry is blended with the pigment, and the coflocced product is dewatered, pelleted, dried and optionally milled. In (II) the slurry is first dewatered to a filter cake, optionally dried, and then mixed with the pigment. The dispersion may then be incorporated into a latex paint. The dispersion or paint should have a viscosity of 70-125 K.U. at room temperature, and, if necessary, thickeners are added. The compositions may also contain other solvents than water, surfactants, plasticizers, glycols as coalescing and anti-freeze agents, latex and other binders, defoamers, and driers. In Examples II-VI and IX the latex binder is a vinyl acetate/acrylic ester copolymer, and in Ex.’s V and VI a bodied safflower emulsion and an epoxy ester emulsion, respectively, are also present. In Ex. VII the binder is polyvinyl acetate and in Ex. VIII an acrylic polymer (Examples I and IX are outside the scope of the invention). The other ingredients are the pigmented asbestos, water, an organic bentonite thickener, anionic and nonionic surfactants, ethylene glycol, butyl Carbitol (R.T.M.) acetate, a silicon defoamer, a fungicide, titania, kaolin clay and calcium carbonate. In Ex. VIII ammonium hydroxide is also present.
