Abstract

1354200 Laying fabrics CUTTERS MACHINE CO Inc 27 Dec 1972 [16 May 1972] 59735/72 Heading D1S A combined fabric laying machine and winding mechanism comprises a carriage 11 reciprocable over a fabric-laying table 14, a laying unit 22 on the carriage 11 for laying the fabric on the table 14, a driven shaft 28 connected to rotate a fabric supply roll 16 mounted on the carriage 11, reversible drive means for selectively driving the shaft 28 in one feeding direction or in the reverse winding direction, and a selector device for actuating the drive means to drive the shaft 28 in the feed direction or the winding direction. When the machine is laying, the fabric 17, Fig. 1, passes through an edge control device 18, over a guide bar 19, under a driven feed roll 20, over a driven pivoted dancer roll 21 and is laid in layers 23 by blades (not shown) of the unit 22. At each end of the lay, the unit 22 cooperates with a catcher mechanism (not shown). A motor 25 drives the rear wheels 13 of the carriage 11. The shaft 28 supports the feed roller sections 29 and drives a shaft 30 supporting roller sections 31. The roll 15 is supported by spindles 37, 38, Fig. 2, inserted into the core thereof and slidable in standards 35, 36. The shaft 28 supports a sprocket 40 having mounted internally thereof a unidirectional or overriding clutch 41, Fig. 4, so that when the sprocket 40 is driven counterclockwise of Fig. 1 the clutch 41 drives the shaft 28. The sprocket 40 is driven by a reversible motor 42 which also drives a sprocket 54 on the shaft 55 of the roll 20. The roll 21 is driven from the shaft 55. The sprocket 54 is provided with an overriding clutch 57 so that the roll 20 is only driven clockwise of Fig. 1, i.e. when the carriage 10 is laying. A hub 58, Fig. 4, is fixed to the inner face of the sprocket 40 and has clutch teeth 59 each terminating at one end in an abutment 60 and tapering at the other in a cam surface 61. A sprocket 32 is secured to the shaft 28 and has fixed thereto a hub 63 having a clutch face from which project lugs 64 to be drivingly engaged by the abutments 60. The sprocket 40 is slidable axially of the shaft 28 so that the lugs 64 engage abutments 60 by the pulling of a hand knob 70, Fig. 2, on a rod 68 fixed to a yoke 67 having forked ends 66, Fig. 4, received in a groove 65 in the hub 58. In order for the machine to function as a winding mechanism, the motor 42 is reversed by a manual switch 72, Fig. 2, which reverses the sprocket 54 so that the clutch 20 no longer drives the roll 20. The sprocket 40 is also reversed and due to the clutch 41, the shaft 28 and the roll sections 29, 31 remain idle. The operator pulls the knob 70 so that the teeth 59 engage with the lugs 64 and the sprocket 32 is driven to drive the shaft 28 and the roll sections 29, 31 in the reverse direction so that the fabric 17 is wound on the roll 15. When the knob 70 is released and the switch 72 returned to the feed position, the motor 42 is driven in its forward direction to effect fabric laying. As the sprocket 40 rotates clockwise of Fig. 4, the surfaces 61 ride over the lugs 64 to force the hub 58 axially outward of the shaft 28 to disengage the teeth 59 from the lugs 64. The clutch 41 rotates the shaft 28 in the forward feed direction.
