Abstract

1354352 Moulding structural members; laminates MONOSTRUCT CORP Ltd 18 May 1971 [5 June 1970 21 April 1971] 15633/71 Headings B5A and B5N A moulded structural member, e.g. a panel, comprises a core composed of opposed sheets 14, 16 with a honeycomb structure, e.g. of kraft paper, disposed therebetween providing cells 20, the core being enclosed by a homogeneous covering 22, 24, 26 and 28, e.g. of plastics foam, e.g. polyurethane foam. The covering is applied by locating the core in a mould cavity with its base spaced from the mould bottom by spacers such as 30 or 32 and applying plastics foam material thereover; the mould may be closed before the material may be such that gas may flow from one cell to the other; gas pressure produced in the core during expansion of the moulding material may be relieved before mould removal by removing a plug on the mould wall and piercing the moulding material and a core covering sheet. The latter may be pierced at one or more desired locations, e.g. at 50, Fig. 2, to enable material to flow into and fill some of the core cells, e.g. to provide ribs extending through the core. In order to withstand the internal pressure built up on the member, the mould may be held closed, e.g. by a press; such press may comprise a frame with a line of parallel rollers against which the mould is clamped by a further frame with similar rollers or bars.
