Abstract
1354576 Hydrophilic polyurethane foams FRITZ NAUER & CO 7 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 13785/71 Heading C3R Hydrophilic polyurethane foams are prepared in a one-shot process by reacting, in the presence of a catalyst for the methane formation, a catalyst for the propellant formation, at least one foam stabilizing agent and water, an organic polyisocyanate with a polyether polyol component comprising a mixture of (a) 30 to 100% by weight of the addition product of 35 to 100 moles of ethylene oxide or a mixture of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, the ethylene oxide representing the major amount of this mixture, to 1 mole of an aliphatic diol or a mixture of an aliphatic diol and an aliphatic triol, the diol representing the major amount of this mixture, and (b) 0 to 70% by weight of a polyether polyol having branched chains and derived from an aliphatic triol, the equivalent weight ratio of the polyisocyanate to the polyol component being adjusted to 80 to 105 : 100, and an inert vapourizable liquid being added to the reaction mixture in amounts to prevent the temperature at any point in the forming foam block from exceeding 120‹ C. during the entire time of foam preparation. A swelling agent such as montmorillonite, bentonite and lithium-, sodium-, magnesium fluorosilicates may be added to the reaction mixture as may so-called cell destructors, e.g. siliconecontaining mixtures with cellulose or cellulose derivatives. In a typical Example the following ingredients are mixed together and reacted: an ethylene glycol based polyethylene ether diol, a polyether obtained by addition of propylene oxide to glycerol, sodium-, lithium-, magnesium fluorosilicates, toluylene diisocyanate, water, tetramethylbutane diamine, a commercial foam stabilizer, stannous octoate and a commercial halogenated hydrocarbon. The foams may be used as cleaning sponges or cloths.
