Abstract
1355110 Stilbenyl derivatives of benzo-bistriazole CIBA-GEIGY AG 1 Oct 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 45800/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division D1] Novel stilbenyl derivatives of benzo-bistriazole have the general formula wherein D is a benzoxazol-2-yl, 1,3,4-oxadiazol- 2-yl, benztriazol-2-yl, naphthtriazol-2-yl or benzo-bis-triazol-2-yl radical optionally substituted by 1 to 3 substituents selected from halogen, alkoxy, phenoxy, phenyl, phenalkyl, cycloalkyl, methylenedioxy or alkyl having at least 2 carbon atoms, or methyl in the case of the benzoxazol-2-yl radical, and R x , R y and R z are hydrogen, alkoxy, halogen, or alkyl having at least 2 carbon atoms, or R x is phenyl or phenylalkyl or R x together with R y is a methylenedioxy group, are prepared by reacting a Schiff’s base of the formula wherein h and k denote hydrogen, chlorine or methoxy, in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 with a compound of the formula in the presence of dimethylformamide and of a strongly basic alkaline compound (i.e. having a dissociation constant of at least 0À6) such that if the alkali compound is an alkali metal hydroxide up to 25% by weight of water may be present and if the alkali compound is not an alkali metal hydroxide no water is present. The alkali compound is suitably a potassium compound of the formula wherein x is an integer from 1 to 6. The novel compounds are useful as optical brightening agents for organic materials.
