Abstract

1355412 Pigments dispensed in organic media; polymeric deflocculants ICI AUSTRALIA Ltd 7 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 13717/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division C4] A non-aqueous dispersion of a pigment comprises a pigment, an organic liquid and a deflocculating agent soluble in said liquid, said deflocculating agent being an addition copolymer comprising (a) 99-50 mole per cent of mer units containing a solubilizing group (defined) and (b) 1-50 mole per cent of mer units which carry groups forming, or capable of forming an internal salt structure, and which are selected from the following mer units containing cationic or potentially cationic groups and the following mer units containing anionic or potentially anionic groups wherein W is a dicovalent linking group, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 separately are H or alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, two of which may be joined to form a heterocycle, R 4 is H or -CH 3 and R 5 is -OR 6 or R 6 , R 6 being alkyl or aryl. The solubilizing group is one which is solvatable by the organic medium. Such groups are phenyl and toluyl for aromatic hydrocarbons. C 6-20 aliphatic for aliphatic hydrocarbons, and polyoxyethylene groups for media such as alcohols and ketones. The amount of deflocculant in the composition is preferably from 0À001 to 0À05 gms. per 10 sq. m. of pigment surface À0À05 to 5% w./w. of water may also be,present. The flocculants are prepared by introducing the ionic groups into a polymer by chemical reaction or preferably by polymerizing monomers already containing suitable groups. In the examples the defiocculants are copolymers of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and (2) dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate quaternized with benzyl chloride; (4) 2-methylthioethylacrylate quaternized with dimethyl sulphate; (5) allyl triphenylphosphonium bromide; (12) styrene and dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate; (13) and (14) the Na and Ca salts of (12); (15) styrene and 4-vinyl pyridine and (16) the Ca salt of (15), and also the following copolymers: (6) and (7) a sulphonated copolymer of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate / benzylchloride quaternized dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate; (8) the phosphonated copolymer of (6) and (7); (9) a phosphonated copolymer of allyl tri-phenyl phosphonium bromide, glycidyl methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; and (17) itaconic acid/2- ethylhexylacrylate/dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. These are used to disperse TiO 2 in xylene, carbon black in xylene, and C black, TiO 2 chromium oxide and some organic pigments in toluene.
