Abstract
1357728 Linkwork; slack adjusters; internal shoe drum brake actuators GIRLING Ltd 18 Aug 1971 [21 Aug 1970 17 March 1971] 40422/70 and 7071/71 Headings F2K and F2E A load transmitting strut comprises a cylinder member C having a stepped bore, which receives a relatively large piston A and a relatively small piston B, and having a frusto-conical transitional portion, and a mass of fluent granular material E filling the chamber between the pistons A and B, the arrangement being such that the application of a force to one piston and a corresponding reactive force to the other causes the granular material E to compact and to lock the members A, B and C against relative movement, and upon the subsequent relief of the force, the member C is moved by a force D to cause the spacing between the pistons A and B to be varied. Modified forms of the assembly A, B, C, D and E are shown in Fig. 9. The strut may be. utilized as an automatic wear compensating adjuster in a disc brake actuator. As shown in Fig. 2, a large piston A bears against a brake pad assembly 3, and a spring 12 supplies the force D necessary to move the cylinder C. In Fig. 3, the strut assembly is employed as a lock actuator for an internal shoe drum brake comprising a doubleended wheel cylinder 20 having opposed pistons 21. A cylinder space 23 is connected to a parking lock pressure line 23A, and a cylinder space 24 is connected to the working chamber 22. In a modification, shown in Fig. 4, a strut assembly A, B, C, E is located between main pistons 31, 32, the cylinder C being formed as an intermediate floating piston having on one side of it a service brake pressure chamber 33 and on the other side of it a hand brake pressure chamber 34. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which small piston B is fast with one shoe shackle 41 and piston A has a limited amount of axial lost motion relative to a member 44 secured to a second shoe shackle 43. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which the pistons A and B are located at right angles to each other.
