Abstract
1357998 Operating mechanism for sliding doors WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 28 Feb 1973 [14 April 1972 18 Nov 1972] 17431/72 and 53431/72 Heading E2M A sliding door operating mechanism comprises an electric motor 1 driving a shaft 4 via a reduction gear box 3; a crank 5 on the shaft acting via pivot pin 6 on one arm 8 of a door operating lever pivoted at 9, a door mounting bracket 15 connected by link 14 to another arm 11 of the operating lever, and biassing means urging the pin 6 overcentre with respect to the shaft 4 and the pivot 9 in the ‘closed’ position of the mechanism shown to prevent accidental opening. In the embodiment shown the biassing means is a weight arrangement in the gear box 3 and a nylon roller mounted on pin 6 moves along the operating lever toward pivot 9 as the mechanism is moved to the ‘open’ position (shown dotted). The biasing means may be spring actuated. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the pin 6 moves along the lever in a direction away from the pivot 9 as the mechanism is moved to the open position; and in alternative arrangements (not shown) the pivot 9 may be mounted to move either along the lever, (toward or away from the pivot pin 6) or to be guided in a path on base plate 10. In the event of electrical failure a lever 16, pivoted at 17, can be manually lifted to release it from detent 21 and operated to move the pin 6 out of its over centre position and allow the door to be pushed open. Switches 22 and 24 are engaged by the crank and a cam 24 on the operating lever to interrupt the closing or opening current in the extreme positions, and a switch 23 engaged by the lever 16 open circuits the electrical supply when this lever is moved.
