Abstract

1360222 Coating glass ANCHOR HOCKING CORP 20 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 34075/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C1 and C5] A coating of polyethylene, polyvinyl alcoholcannauba wax or a silicone resin is applied to a glass article which has been heated to 150-400‹F and contains replaceable sodium ions, comprises heating the article to a temperature above the annealing point of the glass but below the temperature at which the article sags substantially out of shape in contact with Cu Cl, Cu Br and/or Cu I vapours so as to enrich a surface layer of the article with copper ions in partial exchange for the sodium ions in the glass, cooling the article below the annealing point without causing reduction of the copper ions. Preferably the coating is sprayed on, but dipping or a fluidized bed are also referred to. Examples are given. Additional coating with SnO 2 or with tetra-isopropyl titanate is also disclosed.
