Abstract
1360328 Acetic acid MONSANTO CO 17 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 53221/72 Heading C2C Acetic acid containing iodine or iodine containing impurities is purified by distilling in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or salt of a weak organic acid or if free iodine is present, hypophosphorous acid, The process is preferably carried out in two columns, to the first of which the acid and agent are introduced intermediate, the overhead product is introduced intermedaite to the second column and the purified acetic acid removed from the lower half thereof. Examples describe the purification of crude by the carbonylation of methanol in the presence of rhodium and an iodine component with carbon monoxide. Potassium acetate is the preferred agent.
