Abstract
1360742 Keyboards ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 13 July 1972 [2 June 1972] 32887/72 Heading G4H [Also in Divisions G1 and H3] A non contact making switch for use in a keyboard has a magnet movably mounted with – in the switch housing so as to saturate or desaturate a toroidal transformer core, and the core windings emerge through the housing for insertion into a printed circuit board. The basic switch is shown in Fig. 8; a pair of windings 52 pass through toroid 49, one of the windings carrying an A.C. signal and the other acting as a sense line. The toroid is normally saturated by movable magnets 47, one on each side thereof, so that there is no coupling between the windings. When key 44 is depressed the toroid desaturates and the sense winding receives a signal which can actuate a load, e.g. a typewriter. The windings pass through housing 41 and are soldered to an X-Y matrix of conductors on a printed circuit board 53. The toroid may be formed as a moulded body carrying the windings, Figs. 9, 11, 13, 14 (not shown) detachable from the housing of the switch; after soldering the toroid body to the printed circuit board this allows the housing to be removed for repair purposes. In such cases the housing is normally supported by a separate plate 116, Fig. 15, above the printed circuit board, retaining lugs 124 on the housing being depressible for removal of the housing by a tool 128 inserted through an aperture 126 in the printed circuit board. The board shown in Fig. 15 is provided with space 117a for electronic components.
