Abstract
1360760 Pulse generators COMMISSARIAT A L’ENERGY ATOMIQUE 7 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 56616/72 Heading H3P [Also in Division H1] A generator for producing pulses having fast rise and fall times comprises a D.C. high voltage source 32 connected directly to one end of a transmission line 34 whose other end is connected to a load and via a switch 40 to one end of a second transmission line 38 whose other end is open. In operation, the line 34 is initially charged to a voltage u from the source 32 via a high valued resistor 36. When the switch 40 is closed, the line 34 discharges into the line 38 by producing a rectangular pulse of amplitude u/2 and of duration equal to twice the transit time in line 34. Due to voltage doubling at the open end, the line 38 is fully charged to voltage u with line 34 becoming completely discharged. With switch 40 remaining closed, the line 38 discharges back into line 34. If the lines 34, 38 have identical characteristics and identical lengths, the durations of voltage pulses produced at output terminals 44, 46 equals the pulse intervals. The switch 40 may be formed by a spark gap or a thyratron.
