Abstract
1360835 Uses of photochromism RCA CORPORATION 8 July 1971 [8 Oct 1970 (2)] 32239/71 Heading C4S [Also in Division H1] A cathodochromic display tube has a target of cathodochromic material 10 colourable by electron impingement with a coloration having an optically reversible component and an optically irreversible component, wherein the target is exposed to an electron beam which is modulated and simultaneously scanned to provide a visible coloration pattern means being included to suppress, at least a portion of the optically reversible component only. Suppression may be by radiation of erasing wavelength, by heating to below the total erase temperature, e.g. by infra-red radiation from an external or internal source or electrical resistance heating such as a thin metal or indium oxide film 20 on mica sheet 22 and connected to heating circuit 15 or by electron bombardment (e.g. the electron beam with or without additional heating). Gun electrode 30 may be connected to a conductive wall coating on the tube envelope 14. The cathodochromic material may be sodalite (e.g. Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 Cl 2 or with Br-, I-, OH- and SO
