Abstract
1361444 Finishing fabrics H HERGERT 2 Sept 1971 [27 May 1971] 40994/71 Heading D1S A pattern effect is produced on a synthetic pile fabric 21 by passing the fabric over a pattern roll 10 whilst it is brought into contact with a processing element 30, e.g. for heating, cooling, ironing, beating, brushing or electrifying the fabric, the roll 10 being mounted on means 29 pivotable about an axis 35 parallel to the axis of the roll 10. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the roll 10 is formed with longitudinal slots 12 in which desired pattern profiles are releasably mounted by bolts 15 and nuts 16. Preferably each profile has a concave surface shaped to conform to the roll surface, the roll 10 is heated internally and the profiles 13 are made of a heat conductive material. In the apparatus of Fig. 2, the fabric 21 passes around idler rolls 22, 23, 24, 25 and driven feeder and delivery rolls 27, 28, respectively. A pile beater 26 is provided and the roll 10 is positioned close to an electrifier cylinder 30 disposed within an exhaust hood 31. The rolls 10, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28 and the beater 26 are mounted on a carriage 29 pivotable about an axis 35 and having a worm lifter screw 36. The roll 10 is slidable on a rail 39. The roll 10 and the rolls 27, 28 may or may not be driven from the same drive. In modifications, the cylinder 30 is replaced by (a) a concave ironer plate, Fig. 8A (not shown), (b) two pressure heated cylinders mounted upon parallel: axes and which may have surface designs, Fig. 8B (n.s.), (c) a pressure roll which may have a contoured face with sculptured or plain profiles and may be heated, Fig. 8C (n.s.), (d) a rotary brush having its axis parallel to the axis of the pattern roll, Fig. 8D (n.s.), (e) swirling brushes rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the pattern roll, Fig. 8E (n.s.), and (f) swirling electrifier units disposed along and perpendicular to the axis of the pattern roll, Fig. 8F (not shown). The fabric may be preheated before entry into the treatment zone and cooled upon exit therefrom. The non-pile surface of the fabric may be heated in the treatment zone. Two treatment zones may be provided to affect the lay of the pile fibres in different ways.
